Fun STEM activity to make at home

Let's make some oobleck!  All you need is corn starch and water to make this non-Newtonian substance.  It is a liquid or a solid?  Then watch the Dr. Seuss story of Bartholomew and the oobleck. The librarian from Coos Bay public library does an excellent job of explaining the science behind oobleck.  ENJOY!

Measure about 1/2 cup of corn starch into a bowl.  Then gradually add 1/4 cup of water.  Stir it all together.  If will be a little hard to stir so you may want to use your fingers. If the oobleck is too runny add more corn starch.  The mixture should be stiff to stir but be able to run through your fingers when you try to pick it up.  This will get messy but it is a lot of fun.  When you are finished with your oobleck you can keep it in a ziploc bag and play with it for a few days. When it is time to discard your oobleck DON'T PUT IT DOWN YOUR KITCHEN DRAIN.  Just put it in the garbage.  The oobleck might plug up the drain.
